Taipei Customs Urges Cross-boarder Passengers Honestly Declare Money Laundering items

Taipei Customs stated that the total number of seized cases with regards to money laundering items, such as cash, gold and other items has reached 56 from January to October in 2024, 33% higher than in 2023 (42 cases). The confiscated value has increased from NTD (New Taiwan Dollar) 39.43 million to NT 58.84 million, 49% higher than in 2023. Among these items, the confiscated gold has increased significantly from 7,637 grams to 12,328 grams.
    
Taipei Customs further stated that in accordance with Money Laundering Control Act, any inbound or outbound passenger carrying the following items under the following circumstances is obliged to declare to Customs upon each arrival and departure. 
1. Carrying cash in an aggregate amount exceeds New Taiwan Dollars (NTD)100,000.
2.Carrying cash in an aggregate amount exceeds Renminbi(RMB) 20,000. 
3.Carrying foreign currencies (combined amount) other than NTD and RMB in an aggregate amount exceeds USD 10,000 equivalent. 
4.Carrying bearer negotiable securities with face value in excess of USD 10,000 or its equivalent. 
5. Carrying gold in an aggregate amount exceeds the value of USD 20,000.
6.Carrying diamonds, precious stones or platinum (not intended for personal use) exceeds the value of NTD 500,000.
    
Taipei Customs further stated that the limited amounts of the aforementioned item are applied to "each" passenger regardless of his/her age. No fees or duties are needed for passengers submitting the customs declaration form. Taipei Customs reminded travelers to make the declaration honestly. False declaration may lead to being fined or goods to be confiscated.
