Taipei Customs stated that, the cases of seized cannabis and its related products, including cannabis bud, cannabis wax, cannabis gummies, cannabis vape oil and other narcotics, have reached 123 from January to August in 2024, with a total gross weight of 694 kilograms. The total seized cases and weight of aforementioned drugs in 2024 have significantly increased, compared to pre-pandemic in 2019, which the seized cases were 102 and gross weight was 243 kilograms.
Taipei Customs pointed out that although some popular tourist regions, such as Germany, Canada, certain states in the United States and Thailand, have legalized marijuana for recreational use, Marijuana is still listed under the Category two narcotics in accordance with "Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act" in Taiwan. Offenders of manufacturing, transporting, selling, cultivating, transferring, possessing or taking Category two narcotics are subject to life imprisonment or a minimum ten-year fixed-term imprisonment, and may also be subject to a fine of no more than fifteen million New Taiwan dollars.
Taipei Customs reminded the public that marijuana is highly addictive. Taking these drugs may have the following side effects: rapid heartbeat, delusions, hallucinations, dry mouth, red eyes, etc. Intake of long time could cause memory loss, learning and cognitive decline, and psychological dependence, which could seriously harm physical and mental health.
Taipei Customs urges the public not to import cannabis and its related products to Taiwan, so as not to be penalized. The Customs will continue to implement government anti-drug policies to intercept drugs to protect citizens' health.
