While the Chinese New Year holidays are approaching, demand for giving gifts and holiday shopping is rising. In order to deter the smuggling of pork products, Taichung Customs states that they will strengthen the inspection of international postal parcels and make every effort to prevent the invasion of African swine fever (ASF). Meanwhile, the public is urged to remind their relatives and friends abroad not to send meat-containing products to Taiwan to avoid violating the laws and being fined.
From January to November 2023, 160 cases of pork and its products were seized from the imported postal parcels Taichung Customs inspected.Taichung Customs will continue to use X-ray equipments to inspect parcels to strictly prevent the concealment of smuggled pork and related products.
Taichung Customs further specified that people are advised not to buy or send pork products from abroad to Taiwan via imported parcels to avoid being punished. Once the customs discovers pork products that have not been quarantined, the goods should be returned abroad or destroyed, and the importer will be transferred to the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency, Ministry of Agriculture(APHIA) for punishment in accordance with "Statute for Prevention and Control of Infectious Animal Diseases",please abide by the rules and don’t take any chances.
