Kaohsiung Customs Seizes Smuggled Cigarettes Worth About NT$25 Million

Kaohsiung Customs successfully intercepted a shipping container of smuggled cigarettes with an estimated market value of NT$ 25 million on August 18, 2020. This is another significant anti-smuggling achievement following its seizure of a container filled with contraband cigarettes earlier in June.

According to Kaohsiung Customs, to counter smuggling more effectively, the inspectors not only monitor container yards by patrols but also target containers based on risk management and big data analysis. The incident happened when the inspectors were informed of a suspicious 40-foot refrigerated container with its shipment declared as “fresh radish.” Soon after reviewing relevant intelligence and manifests, they collaborated with Kaohsiung Harbor Police to conduct an inspection, discovering approximately 1,000 cases of “Black Devil” brand cigarettes worth about NT$ 25 million. The contraband cigarettes were confiscated in accordance with the Customs Anti-smuggling Act and the Tobacco and Alcohol Administration Act.

Kaohsiung Customs further indicates that, to protect national tax revenues and the public’s health, the inspectors remain vigilant and committed to combating smuggling attempts—deterring smugglers from utilizing disguise and fraud to evade tobacco-related tax. The public is also encouraged to report smuggling activities or trade violations by calling the toll-free number: 0800-711117.
